I had two days with a group of emerging photographers who were selected for the workshop by Canon’s representatives in Phnom Penh. The 7 students were winners of a photo contest conducted in the capital city.

We met at the downtown Siem Reap location of Art Deli Cafe where I gave a slideshow talk about my own work, how I came to photography and how I make ends meet. Then I reviewed the work of each student, giving specific advice to each, talking about some of the common pitfalls of constructing an image, and examined different professional avenues each might want to pursue.

It was a great pleasure to return to teaching and it’s always an advantage to have students who are passionate about the subject at hand. Judging by the group photo at left, and subsequent student reviews, it seems everyone had a blast.

Canon has organised a nine-category contest called Photo Marathon for budding Cambodian photographers, and the winners of each category will come to Siem Reap for the duration of the festival and be my students for a two-day crash course on the fundamentals of photography and the business of making images.

This will be my third year at the festival. The first was in 2007 when I was green and knew nothing of the milieu, and the second was in 2008 when my multimedia expose on the Kenyan post-election crisis was screened. It is a true honor to return to Angkor Photo in this capacity, in many ways a product of the concept behind the festival – one of exchange, inspiration and encouragement.

Look out for an update post in November about the winners and their work.

The Kenyan Crisis Revisited

Two years after the post-election violence rocked Kenya, I went searching back through my archives and discovered a black and white series which has a more documentary approach to the subject matter. I spent three months covering events in Kenya on a daily basis starting in January 2008. Most of my photographs were distributed to news outlets via Reuters. Editors sought wire-style images, but many of the photographs I was taking didn’t fall in that category and, not surprisingly, they tell the story in a more in-depth and intimate fashion. “It’s our time to eat,” was a phrase oft used by opposition supporters who felt they have historically been deprived of power and economic advantages enjoyed by other ethnicities. The phrase was first coined in Michela Wrong’s ground-breaking book by the same title. A slideshow of select images is up on my portfolio or you can see the full edit on my archive.
